Curriculum, Instruction and Assesment

Message from Ms. Donna Hastie

Director of Curriculum & Instruction

Welcome to North Haledon School District.  North Haledon is K-8 district offering a variety of different courses throughout the years. The district contains two schools, Memorial School with a grade K-4 configuration and High Mountain Schools with a grade 5-8 configuration.

Students in Memorial School attend general music, art, physical education, library, and computers on a weekly basis.  These subjects are in addition to the core subjects of mathematics, language arts literacy (reading, spelling, phonics, writing, and grammar), science, social studies, and health & safety, as well as an introduction to basic spanish.

Students in High Mountain School attend the same core subjects as Memorial School students as well as special subjects such as general music, art, physical education, spanish, computers, home economics, & industrial arts.  High Mountain School is organized into grade level teams to promote cross-curricular activities for the middle school student.

Curriculums are constantly changing and revising as the state revises the Core Curriculum Content Standards.  Curriculum committees made up of teachers and administrators continue to work on updating curriculums based on student needs, improvement of instructional practices as well as and state mandates.  Currently all curriculums are being evaluated and revised based on the newest 2009 state standards. Presently, the Science curriculum has been revised to reflect these standards. The curriculum committee is presently evaluating and assessing new mathematics programs for possible adoption at the end of the 2009-10 school year.

The 6th graders are currently participating in a pilot study utilizing the Connected Mathematics program.  Connected Mathematics is a hands-on approach to mathematics and enables students to think differently when solving mathematics problems.  This is the second year of a two year study conducted by Rutgers University.

New to 2009-10 is the writer's workshop approach to Language Art Literacy. This program in grades K-5 will incorporate a new writing program into the curriculum and will provide teachers with extensive training in teaching Language Arts.
